The Rainbow Above the Sky

Rainbow is such beautiful scenery that we love so much to see. However, not everyone has ever directly seen rainbow as this natural phenomenon rarely happens. If you wonder anything about rainbow, you will be interested in the following info.

When you see rainbow, you will find that the shape seems like a bow hanging on the blue sky. It comes from the refraction of the sunlight on rainy days. Usually a rainbow can be seen in mountainous areas when the rain has just stopped falling down. Rainbow is the only electromagnetic wave that we are able to see.

Rainbow consists of several beautiful color spectrums. Most people have known that rainbow has red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. However, there are actually other colors that we can not define and see directly with naked eye. Red has the greatest wavelength, while violet has the smallest wavelength.

Now you might wonder how a rainbow can appear. Let us examine the sun rays on the mirror bracket or the edge of the prism glass, or soapy foam surface. We will see different colors of light. What happens is that white light is refracted into various wavelengths of visible light by which our eyes define those colors as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet.

The wavelength of this light forms band like parallel stripes. This band is called "spectrum". Just like it has been mentioned before, red line is always located at one end while violet on the other one. Once more, it is determined by the difference in wavelength. Rainbow is a large curved spectrum caused by the refraction of sunlight.

When sunlight passes through water droplets, it is refracted just like when it passes through the prism glass. Within the droplets, we will find a different color extends from one side to the other water droplets. Some of the colored light is then reflected from the far side of the water droplets, in and out of the water droplets. You can see a rainbow when your eyes, the sun, and the central arc of the rainbow are in a straight line.
